DocDay Afternoon at Sheffield Doc/Fest

When : Wednesday 7 November 2007 10am - 6pm

Where: Hallam University Student Union Building, (HUBS) Paternoster
Row, Sheffield S1 2QQ

Why?: DocDay Afternoon is for A-level students who want to make a
documentary and get it up on the Channel 4 broadband documentary
channel, FourDocs ,with some help from leading documentary experts. The
day is an inspiring, intensive and entertaining day of panels, workshops,
screenings and hands-on filmmaking surgeries.
The aim is for all students to get a 4-minute doc made and up on FourDocs -
http://www.channel4.com/fourdocs
Some of the best documentary practitioners from around the UK – directors,
producers, editors and commissioners - will be there to help you in your
production of a four minute documentary to upload onto Channel 4’s
FourDocs.

Who?: DocDay Afternoon is for A-level students who want to make
documentaries and could use help from the experts. There will be panel
presentations and a range of leading industry mentors available on the day to
help students with their short doc productions , giving feedback, advice and
technical assistance.
The mentors are a mix of award-winning directors, commissioners, TV
executives and much more - students will never find this kind of access to
industry advice at any other event in the UK.

How?: DocDay Afternoon recommends that teachers get students working
on their short documentaries from September onwards.
Students and teachers are strongly encouraged to get direct advice in advance
from FourDocs producer Charlie Phillips
(charlie.phillips@magiclantern.co.uk) to help prepare for the workshop day.
We encourage students to send in a rough cut of their documentary by
October 30 (maximum 10 minutes) and this will be digitized into the edit
system and those films will receive tailored advice from the mentors on the
day to help the students make the best documentary for the FourDocs site.
If you do not have a doc ready you can still learn a lot on the day. You can
come with a doc at idea stage; maybe it’s already shot; or maybe it’s already
in the edit – whatever stage, the day will help you create a great doc. You can
even come along without a specific film idea in mind and get inspired by the
fabulous filmmakers who will be mentoring. But if you do bring footage or a
film, you will be able to get one-on-one advice from mentors who will watch
your footage and give you tips and criticism.
There will be access to cameras and editing systems. So you can take up the
challenge to shoot, edit or just spend the day with the mentors.

Cost: £10 per student - for just £10 you get the full panels, workshops and
an exclusive documentary screening (see itinerary below). Teachers
accompanying a group of students go free!
