Company Name: British Federation of Film Societies

Business Category: Film

Brief description of business:

BFFS is funded by the UK Film Council and is the national support and development agency for the film society and community cinema sector with approx 230 member societies across the UK - a membership of over 25,000 people.  Film societies screen more than 5,000 films per year to a combined total audience of over 1 million.  BFFS has supported specialised (art-house) cinema exhibition in the voluntary sector since its inception over 60 years ago and today continues to provide advice, technical support and education opportunities to communities across the UK through its regional network.  Each year BFFS hosts the Film Society of the Year Awards, recognising excellence in all aspects of film society endeavours.

BFFS extends a diversity of viewing choice critical within the UK cultural economy and offers increased opportunities for access and diversity – in more remote regions of the country where access to any sort of cinema is restricted, but also in metropolitan areas with no alternative to mainstream titles.  Film societies have a strong history of bringing to audiences those films not on general commercial release and in this way have provided national exposure for many minority interest and foreign language films.  Many recent specialised films made here and abroad owe much of their exhibition opportunities in Britain to film societies.

Creative Partnerships

Business Category: Creative Sector

Brief description of business:

Creative Partnerships provides school children across England with the opportunity to develop creativity in learning and to take part in cultural activities of the highest quality. It is not a funding body but aims to establish genuine collaborative partnerships to enable the development of projects that reflect the interests, specialisms and shared vision of those involved. It is one of our objectives to encourage talented young people to consider a careers in the creative industries.

Creative Partnerships is part of the Arts Council England and Sheffield is just one of the 36 Creative Partnerships areas around the country.

The idea behind Creative Partnerships is to animate the National Curriculum (including both the arts and sciences!) using a unique approach that makes best use of the creative wealthin the UK.To do this we first help schools to identify their individual needs. Once these are established we assist and encourage the schools to develop long-term, sustainable partnerships with creative organisations and individuals in order to meet these needs and achieve their goals through creative practice and learning. Schools may develop partnerships with theatre companies, museums, cinemas, film-makers, script-writers, architects, fashion designers, recording studios, musicians, animators and many more! Our aim is to enrich thelives of pupils and capture the imagination of young people, children, parents, carers and teaching staff through creative learning.

For example, a school may wish to encourage its young people to eat more healthily. Insuch acase, agame designer may workalongside awriter to develop an interactive healthy eating game and guide with the young people. They may also bring in a product designer and a chef ornutritionist as advisors.

Alternatively, the schools may select a script-writer and animator to work with the young people to create an animated healthy-eating cookery show.

Whichever way the project is delivered, theunderlying aim would be to develop the young people'screative competencies. By working with creative practitioners, organisations and advisors, the project is delivered in a fun and imaginative way that may encourage competencies such as co-working, divergent thinking andrisk-taking.The end result could be increased confidence, new ideas and problem-solving skills in the young people that took part in the project, as well as a concrete outcome they can take pride in.

Film Production & Finance

Studio of the North (SON) is an umbrella organisation providing finance, production and executive production services. SON adds to the achievements of its predecessor YMPA and as such we work closely with a selected group of writers, producers and directors. Films we have executive produced or co-financed in recent years include the BAFTA winners "This Little Life" and  "My Wrongs #8245-8249 and 117". Other recent projects include the Sheffield shot "Principles of Lust". In recent distribution are the BIFA nominated romantic comedy  “Chicken Tikka Masala” and the lyrical documentary  “Battaglia”. We always look for truly Independent films to be involved in and work between the private, commercial and grant aided sectors. Projects listed above have been supported by, among others, Independent Media Investments (part of SON), Media Plus, Medtia Media, INSPIRAL, the BBC, Film Four and Channel Four. We have been involved in various production/financing roles in 17 feature films and numerous hours of television over the last 9 years.
